Death of Robert Murphy, of the 505th paratrooper regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division
Sir,
It is with great sadness that members of the Airborne Museum learned the death of Mr. Robert Murphy on 4 October 2008.
Having jumped in Sicily and Italy in 1943 he made the historic leap of 6 June on Holy Mother Church. Pathfinder's 505th RIP he participated in the success of his regiment in perfectly marking its Drop Zone, which enabled the rapid conquest of the objective of the 505th who was taking our village as soon as possible.
In this respect we owe him and all his brothers in arms infinite gratitude.
But with his human qualities he held in the heart of our fellow citizens an exceptional place. Revenue among the first in 1964 at the site of fighting, he jumped several times on Holy Mother Church during the commemorative anniversaries and has not missed a June 6 since then. It even happened to come twice a year weaving and intimate links with the population. For him the term "second home" was not a figure of speech.
Regarding the Airborne Museum has contributed greatly to the enrichment of our collections and above all it has given much trouble in the U.S. by collecting funds from his friends veterans to finance the construction of the building which currently houses an airplane C47 of the 2nd World War. His wife Barbara was also the sponsor.
We dedicated in recognition infinite involving all veterans who have left us without forgetting its prestigious leaders such as General Ridgway and Gavin under the orders which he fought.
Please Mr. Ambassador you to convey our feelings to your Government, Veterans Associations and the active military which he has remained close until the end of his life.
Jean d'Aigneaux,
The President of the Airborne Museum.
And the members office.

Don Lassen 505th Parachute Regiment of the 82nd Div. Airborne and editor of the newspaper Static Line has left us
Don Lassen was a paratrooper like others in 1944. He did his duty as
his comrades and as such we owe him our gratitude. But it was after the
war that his life was intimately linked to Ste ME he was a citizen of
honor.
I will briefly mention your life and you understand how
much we have lost a great friend. It is indeed died on 8 August 2008
following an operation of the spine followed by cardiac and pulmonary
complications.
Born in Chicago on July 22 1922 of a Scottish
mother and a father Danish. It was a typical American born in a modest
surely felt by the Great Depression of 29.
In 1943 he joined the
Army and volunteered to be a paratrooper. A Fort Benning in Georgia
makes it 3 to 4 months of training. And in December 1943 and is
assigned to the 82nd Div. Airborne. This unit is at that time in Italy
and Sicily leading the first battles of the reconquest of Europe. She
returned to England in February 1944 to prepare the Normandy landings.
It was at that time that Don Lassen joined his unit to cover losses in
Italy, 3rd Platoon of Co. E, 505th Paratrooper Regiment which is
stationed at Camp near Quorn Leistershire. There he found a parachute
that has made Italy, originating with him in Chicago. He did a great
admiration for this friend named Irvin Seelye. The day-J is in the same
plane with Irvin. Their mission is to participate in making ME Ste. A
few days later the platoon Don Lassen is under fire from mortars
Germans. He saw the body of her boyfriend flying in the air. Irvin is
miraculously alive but his eyes met and multiple shrapnel in the body.
Don Lassen provide them with first aid nurse arrived on the scene. At
the first lull Ivin was evacuated on a stretcher placed on the engine
of a jeep and was evacuated to a field hospital located on a farm. It
will be awarded the Bronze Star and named soldier of the 1st class.
Then in the same unit as Don jump in Holland, will make the Battle of
the Bulge, crossing the line Siegfrid operate and link up with Russian
troops in May 1945. It was then promoted to Sergeant and will remain in
Germany until 1946. He then returned to civilian life.
It
undertakes studies and found his old friend and also married student.
Irvin is disabled, but alive, his eyes open wide, but one is made of
glass.
Then he found by chance guidance to civilian life. Indeed
in 1947 in Chicago at the first meeting of veterans of the 82nd. He
writes a summary of a page to friends of his company. This small
account become the Static Line newspaper liaison paratroopers Americans
of all wars (the 2nd World War, but Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan ...
etc), newspaper, which currently draws several thousand copies. This
newspaper published every month is a hyphen intergenerational very
popular among all U.S. paratroopers. There is no issue of Static Line
where the name of Holy Mother Church is written 4 or 5 times.
Apart from being the creator and publisher of this newspaper it was
with the help of the 508th RIP OBHill the great artisan of mass return
of veterans in Europe and mainly Holy Mother Church. Here it muait
tower operator. It carried statutory markings through his newspaper,
organized the trip, receptions, airplane flights, car rentals, lodging.
He had everything from A to Z to get the best price at most veterans to
undertake this pilgrimage. In a modest copy it left other honors,
speeches and deposition of knowing how many jets for these men was a
highlight of their trip.
Outside major journeys in Europe it had
the journalistic coverage of events in the United States and held
meetings with veterans of the Great Annual Awards ceremony in Atlanta.
Some of us went.
Finally he maintained contacts with valuable
military force and personally knew all the senior officers of Airborne
units. So during his last week of life when he was in hospital the
phone rang in his room. The nurse has stalled and asked who was the
aircraft and heard:
- By David Hello, can I talk to Don?
Don asked the nurse what it was David.
- David Paetrus calling Don Baghdad.
Paetrus Davis is the Commander in Chief of the U.S. military.
Also to express our gratitude to the friend Don Lassen and if I get her
daughter Christina desired documents I have a small temporary
exhibition in the Museum for next year.
